Practical Respiratory Tract Investigations & Therapy in Competition Horses

Specis: Equine

Respiratory problems are amongst the most frequently encountered conditions in competition horse practice and diagnosing a specific disease can at times be challenging.  This 1-day practical course is suitable for veterinarians from mixed and equine practice who are keen to update their knowledge and especially the practical skills on how to work-up and treat horses with respiratory conditions.
A panel of internationally renowned specialists will be presenting the following highly-illustrated lectures in English in the morning:

  • Structure and Clinical Examination of the Equine Upper Respiratory Tract
  • Conditions of the Nasal Passages, Pharynx & Larynx
  • The Sinuses & Guttural Pouches
  • Diagnostics of Lower Respiratory Tract Conditions
  • Conditions of the Lower Respiratory Tract & Thorax

In the afternoon, 4 hours of practical sessions will give delegates plenty of opportunity to put theory into practice on live horses and cadaver specimens and to ask questions in small groups (2 – 4 delegates per endoscope), all under the supervision of the specialists. The following practical sessions will be covered during the course:

  • Overground endoscopy demonstration on  a racehorse
  • Thoracic ultrasound
  • Endoscopy of the upper & lower respiratory tract (incl. bronchoalveolar lavage & tracheal wash techniques)
